Tasting at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream

A few months ago a friend of mine was kind enough to share a few pints of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream that had been shipped to her.  It was hands down some of the best American-style ice cream I’ve ever had.  The flavors were intense and unique, the texture was smooth and creamy, and my favorite, the Brown Butter Almond Brittle, tasted exactly like my mother’s shortbread cookies.  So I was incredibly excited to visit one of their scoop shops.  Live vicariously through me as I taste pretty much every flavor under the sun in this previously recorded Facebook Live session!

The Brown Butter Almond Brittle is still my favorite, but I developed a new love affair with the Sweet Potato Eclair ice cream—made with fresh sweet potatoes, scented with Vietnamese cinnamon, and dotted with vanilla pastry flakes and white chocolate bits. It reminded me of pumpkin pie, but with a little bit of crunch from the white chocolate and pastry flakes.

The Churro ice cream was also delicious. I thought this might just be a sort of creamy cinnamon flavored ice cream. Boy was I wrong! In addition to cinnamon, this flavor is loaded with toffee chunks, which give a soft chew that really is reminiscent of biting into the pastry it’s after which it’s named. I want to stuff it into a baked apple!

I was also a big fan of their new seasonal flavor Xocorosa.  Jeni describes this flavor as a “tongue-tingling chocolate with jalapeño  and smoked paprika. Spiked with rose. Inspired by and designed to be paired with Stone Brewing’s mocha stout, Xocoveza.” To me it tastes  like Mexican hot chocolate, with deep rich chocolate flavors and warming cinnamon on the front and a kick of heat from the jalapeño on the finish.  Thank goodness they ship nationwide. I have a feeling I’m going to be eating a lot more ice cream in the coming months!
